How you are reading this article? With your smart phone, laptop or tablet? Whichever device you use, it most likely is connected to the internet. The world is data driven where most of the devices are connected to the internet than us humans. In the 21st century information is power and data is a source to achieve it. How are we supposed to accomplish that? Here comes the buzz word–IoT known as Internet of Things.
What is Internet of Things?
The Internet of things is a system of interrelated computing devices. Mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
Did you get that? If not, you are not alone. Internet of Things is nothing but connecting all the devices in the world to the internet. In other words, these devices are able to transfer the data among each other without human intervention. IoT devices include sensors, smart phones, wearable, trackers etc. The list is never-ending.
These devices can exchange information among each other. The information shared by these devices depends on two things. Firstly, to which device they are attached and secondly, the environment they are present in.
The spectrum of IoT is getting broader and broader. Tech Company IDC predicts that by 2025, 41.6 billion devices will be connected to the internet. The growth of IoT will generate huge amount of data. Subsequently, this data will be transformed into information and used for various research, predictions and much more. In other words, IoT has and will give rise to a digital world. Let’s have a look at the contributions of IoT : –
1. Smart Home
Smart Home is a residence which consists of interconnected smart devices over a series of networks. These interconnected devices provide you the authority to remotely control and monitor your house. This includes controlling the lighting, temperature of the house and much more. In fact, you can also monitor opening and closing of doors and windows, on-off smart TV, air conditioner etc. Accordingly, Smart Home can also remotely control all sorts of kitchen appliances for example coffee maker, microwave etc.
All these instructions can be implemented using a single interface. The interface can be an app or house owner’s voice detected using sensors and microphones present in the house. Above all, home automation provides the ease of living to the house owner. Along with efficient use of resources such as electricity, water etc.
2. Medical and Healthcare
Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) refers to the IoT in medical and health care sector. As IoMT refers to “Smart Healthcare”, it gives rise to the digital healthcare systems. The IoT devices enable the doctors to monitor health remotely. This remote health monitoring system ranges from blood pressure monitors to advance devices that are capable of monitoring advanced attributes of the body.
The advance devices include fit-bit electronic wristbands, pacemakers and etc. Some of the hospitals are using “Smart Beds”. It notifies whether the bed is occupied or not and also when the pateint is about to get up. IoT is redefining the healthcare by assuring better treatment, care outcomes and reduced costs for patients.
3. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Industry 4.0 refers to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). There is an utmost need for inter connectivity and access to real time insights across processes, products, partners and people. This is where Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 comes into picture.
IIoT is all about revolutionizing the way the industrial sector operates and grows. Moreover, Industrial IoT acquires digital technologies such as AI, Big Data, Machine Learning, ERP etc. These technologies build efficient and connected ecosystems for the organization. These technologies serve as building blocks of the industry 4.0. The building blocks include for instance, Supply chain optimization, Predictive Analysis, Asset tracking, quality product management and manufacture cost efficiency.
To summarize, Internet of things is changing the current scenario of the world. As a result, it will directly influence the way we live, work, travel etc. IoT adheres to industry 4.0 which contributes to the Age of Information majorly. In fact, IoT will also be responsible for the digital transformation of cities, organizations and society altogether. Therefore, it is leading us towards the smart world. Similarly, IoT has enhanced the items from daily life that are referred to as “things” or “objects” by using communication, computing and networking. Eventually, entering into the Age of Information through IoT.
